Services
Disclaimer
Therapy is a confidential service provided by mental health
professionals such as psychologists, social workers, or licensed
counselors. Therapy can also be provided by graduate level
students during their training at mental health clinics under the direct
supervision of a licensed mental health professional. Although
therapy is confidential in most settings, mental health providers are mandated by
state law to report incidents of child abuse or neglect
(For
more info:
Department of Children and Family Services)
and elder abuse (For more info:
Illinois Department of Aging). Mental health professionals
may also break confidentiality in certain other
circumstances to ensure client safety and the safety of others.
Dr. Torres has a doctorate degree in clinical psychology and
is currently working towards obtaining an Illinois clinical
psychologist license; thus, he is not licensed but is able to
provide these services under the direct supervision of a
licensed clinical psychologist. For more information about
Illinois psychologist licensure requirements please visit:
Illinois Division of Professional Regulation.
Adolescent & Adult Individual Therapy
Individual
therapy is a journey of self discovery that is facilitated by
mental health professionals who assist the client in
understanding their emotions, changing their behavior, or
creating meaning in their lives. Individual therapy is a
process that often explores many areas of one's
life such as family history, relationships, career, and
academics.
Individual
therapy can often be helpful to individuals struggling with depression,
anxiety, and loss and grief, as well as promote personal
development and assist in the achievement of personal,
professional, and relationship goals. Individual therapy sessions are usually one hour per
week and can last months to years depending on individual needs.
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy, sometimes referred to as marital counseling, is a process in which a mental health
professional trained in couples therapy helps partners come to
a resolution, whether that be separation or reaffirming their
commitment. Couples therapy is a confidential and dynamic
process that often uncovers underlying problems and helps couples improve communication,
emotional expression, and conflict resolution skills, which
generally results in greater respect and intimacy between
partners.
Couples therapy often helps couples experiencing chronic
conflicts, sexual problems, infidelity, and emotional distance.
Couples therapy can also deepen understanding and increase
appreciation for cultural differences,
particularly beneficial for
multicultural relationships and couples preparing for
marriage or union. Dr. Torres has completed Level 1 Training in Gotman Method Couples Therapy, and uses Gottman Method Couples Therapy in his work. Couples therapy sessions are usually one hour per week
and continue until couples have come to a resolution, at which
time treatment goals are reassessed.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is an active process in which a mental health
professional trained in family systems theories aims to help
families reduce discord and improve effective communication and
parenting skills. Family therapy is usually initiated after a
child, who is displaying unwanted behaviors and/or mood
disturbances, is referred for therapy. Often, this process
involves discovering problematic behavioral patterns within
the family and understanding how each member's behavior in the
family influences other members. Family therapy is also
beneficial for parents who have separated but are co-parenting
their children; in addition, families that consist of children
from prior relationships often experience improved
relationships. Family therapy sessions are usually one hour per
week and can last several months.
Psychological Assessment
Psychological assessments are a type of evaluation conducted
by psychologists that consists of a comprehensive clinical
interview and a battery of tests aimed at answering a referral
question. Psychological assessments often help clarify
diagnosis, identify personal strengths and weaknesses, reveal
personality traits, and offer treatment recommendations.
Psychological assessments often take between 8 to 10 hours to
complete, which can be divided up into several testing sessions.
